Ernst von Leutsch's handwritten notes for lectures he gave on Thucydides's History of the Peloponnesian War. Less than one tenth of the manuscript, or a little more than 100 leaves of it, comprises introductory material, addressing aspects such as the life of Thucydides and the sources for it; a review of the scholarly literature; and an overview of the circumstances of Athens at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. The remainder of the manuscript is devoted to a detailed commentary on the History, with running references to book, chapter and verse numbers. The commentary appears to address only Book 1, up to approximately chapter 93. The manuscript is made up of individual gatherings and inserted leaves of varying appearances, evidently comprising an initial set of notes and additional notes inserted over time. In the bibliographic references in the introductory material, dates are found as late as the 1870s, the latest being 1876, in a marginal note that likely does not belong to the earliest period of writing. There is no certain basis for estimating a beginning date; however, references as late as 1847 occur in the main body of the introductory notes, in gatherings that one would take to belong to the initial set of notes.
